Social Literacy Book D1
Who do babies need to survive? Why do people need each other? These are the main questions students set out to answer in this opening unit of Series D of the Social Literacy materials. They investigate the social connections between themselves and those around them and how humans depend on each other, not only when they are babies, but as children and adults as well. The main concepts introduced in this unit, 'needing people' and 'dependence', are building blocks towards the unfolding theme of the series: the meaning of 'community'. The Social Literacy Project has developed this unit as part of an interdisciplinary social science course for primary and secondary schools. The goal of social literacy is for students to develop a framework of social concepts as tools for social understanding and active, confident social participation.
