We are surrounded by rules all the time: road signs, rules of good behaviour, and rules in games that w e play. In this Unit, s t u d e n t s investigate rules in their everyday lives. How do rules work? What are they for? Building upon the concepts of 'needing people', 'co-operation' and 'relationships' introduced in the previous three units of this series the important concept of 'rules' is developed in this unit. This contributes to the unfolding theme of the series: the meaning of 'community'. The Social Literacy Project has developed this unit a s part of an interdisciplinary social science course for primary and secondary schools. The goal of social literacy is for s t u d e n t s to develop a framework of social concepts as tools for social understanding and active, confident social participation.
