Social Literacy Book E4

Environments begins by exploring the ways in which some parts of our environment are natural and some are human. It then investigates why people depend on the environment and have responsibilities within it. Cross-cultural comparison is made of the environment of traditional Aboriginal culture and the environment of industrial culture. The concepts introduced in this unit - dependence, responsibility, thoughtful and thoughtless action, interconnectedness, and breaking of connections lay an important foundation for later units in this series, particularly Unit 7 on Racism, Stereotypes and Prejudice and Unit 8, Families The Social Literacy Project has developed this unit as part of an interdisciplinary social science course for primary and secondary schools. The goal of social literacy is for students to develop a framework of social concepts as tools for social understanding and active, confident social participation.
