Social Literacy Book F4
This book is an inquiry into the connections between human communication and culture. Beginning with an investigation of the different ways in which humans communicate (such as body language and facial expression), it goes on to examine what language is. Language is found to be an essential part of all human groups. Even though there are many different languages, all languages have the common social function of communication. Unit F4 concludes with a study of why languages differ (cultural isolation and creativity), how they influence each other when cultures meet and how culture and language are always changing. The unit contributes to the concepts being developed throughout this series, building towards its overall theme: Culture. The Social Literacy Project has developed this unit as part of an interdisciplinary social science course for primary and secondary schools. The goal of social literacy is for students to develop a framework of social concepts as tools for social understanding and active, confident social participation.
