Social Literacy Book F5
This book analyses basic human needs as the reason for culture. It takes three case studies of housing, clothing and food, and uses these to develop concepts which explain both fundamental human commonalities (human needs and culture itself) and cultural differences in the ways these needs are satisfied (environment, technical development, tradition, and wealth and poverty). It goes on to distinguish these material needs from social, spiritual and emotional needs of belief and belonging. The Social Literacy Project has developed this unit as part of an interdisciplinary social science course for primary and secondary schools. The goal of social literacy is for students to develop a framework of social concepts as tools for social understanding and active, confident social participation.
